Fiji Termites
As early as 2009, AST was seen in rural areas, Later discovered in homes around Lautoka and Labasa areas. By 2010 Coptotermes gestroi (AST) is identified as an invasive pest in Fiji.
2011 Government has spent about $3 million to control Coptotermes gestroi since 2009 for the treatment of damage housing structures, school building and vegetation.
2012 BAF confirms the presence of Coptotermes gestroi in multiple locations in the Western and Northern Divisions.
2016 Public awareness campaign to educate residents about termite prevention and control. BAF reported an increase in termite infestations compared to 2014
2018 Government allocates money towards termite control and management and BAF introduces new chemical treatments to combat the infestation.
2019 New Biosecurity Order expands restricted areas in Ba, Labasa, Lautoka, and Nadi and BAF reports an increase in termite damage to timber and infrastructure.
2020 Government launches a multi-year termite management plan, focusing on integrated pest management and BAF reports an increase in termite activity in restricted areas compared to 2018.
2021 Government increases budgetary support for BAF and BAF introduces new containment measures, including stricter controls on the movement of infested materials.
2022 BAF reports an increase in termite damage to buildings and infrastructure since 2018 and Government announces a national termite awareness month to engage communities in prevention and control efforts.
2023 BAF releases a comprehensive report estimating $3.6 billion in damage to government and business structures due to termite infestations and Government allocates an additional $15 million for termite control and infrastructure repair with BAF reporting an increase in termite activity in restricted areas compared to 2018.
There are about 14 termite species in Fiji
The most comonly discovered termite causing damage around Fiji is Coptotermes gestroi (commonly refered to as Asian Subterranean termite or AST).
Coptotermes gestroi is found Southeast Asia, Africa (Mauritius and Reunion), North America (Florida and Hawaii), South America (Brazil), Central America (Mexico), and Oceania (Fiji, French Polynesia)
And very similar to Coptotermes formosanus which is found across China, Taiwan, Japan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the USA (including Hawaii).
